LPG lamp explosion injures 19 people at Pakyong, East Sikkim

A major fire broke out at a sweet shop at Pakyong Bazaar on 15th October afternoon at around 1.05 pm when a three liters LPG gas lamp exploded inside the shop.

A total 19 people sustained burnt injuries including children. Sherap Gyaltshen (2 year old), and Tempo Gyasto Bhutia (13 year old) studying in class six at Puspanjali School has sustained head injuries. All of a sudden, there was a big sound along with fire at the shop informed the eye witnesses. The shop owner Chandrama Prasad who was running the shop since 25 years has sustained burnt injuries in his face, hands and legs, who was sitting in the counter.

Prasad informed that the three liters LPG gas lamp exploded all of a sudden which was kept at the top of the showcase, and the shop suddenly caught fire. The shop was full with customers who were taking tea and snacks.

The fire was put off by the nearby people, which reduced many damages to the property and lives. Nearby shop owners and people informed that the bursting sound was more than the recent earthquakes as the burst originated shook all the nearby buildings.

All the 19 burnt injured were rushed to the nearby Primary Health Centre where the casualties were provided treatment by the Doctors present along with all the health staffs.

Medical Officer in charge Pakyong PHC Dr. Tashi Peggy Chopell informed that all the burnt casualties were referred to the Central Referral Hospital, Manipal Tadong, Gangtok and added that out of all the injured Tempo Gyasto Bhutia is serious who has sustained injuries in his head including burns in his body.

A team led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Ajay Kumar Rai, Police In charge Pakyong Mahendra Subba, SDM Pakyong Roshni Rai inspected the place. A criminal case under section 285, 336, 337 and 338 has been registered against the shopkeeper Chandrama Prasad at Pakyong Police Station; he will be arrested after recovery from the injuries informed the Police. Presently the shop has been sealed by the Police.

SDM Pakyong informed that the ex-gratia payment will be provided to the injured people under natural calamities fund. Furthermore a team comprising of Area MLA LM Lepcha, East District SDF Party President JK Bhandari, SDF Party workers BB Subba, Tika Gurung also inspected the place of incident at Pakyong and after inspection area MLA Lepcha along with east district SDF party president Bhandari also visited the Central Referral Hospital Manipal, Tadong and meet the injured.

19 people who were the victim of the incident are Diwas Pradhan, Sanjay Kumar Paswan, Sherap Gyaltshen, Karma Tshering Bhutia, Purna Bahadur Gurung, Angi Bhutia, Nimchikki Bhutia, Lakki Doma Bhutia,Thakudem Bhutia, Pempa Bhutia, Shahil Namcho, Tempo Gyasto Bhutia, Tularam Sharma, Dilli Ram Sharma, Bijay Kumar Sani, Padam Tamang, Ratan Rai, Suraj Paswan andChandama Prasad .
