Gangtok, February 17, 2012:

President of Bharatiya Janta Party, Sikkim unit Padam Chettri filed an Right To Information (RTI) application to all the concerned departments of state and central government on January 30 to know the criteria under which the state govt. granted license to Sikkim Manipal Hospital. Sikkim Manipal Hospital is a subsidiary of Sikkim Manipal University (SMU), one of the largest private universities of the country. The information is related to SMU’s department of health and technological science along with Central Referral Hospital, Tadong.

In a press conference held in Sikkim capital Gangtok the BJP President said that through the RTI he wants to know about the criteria. He alleged that all the concerned officers are favoring wrongdoers who have been running their business without proper license and valid documents.

“Owners of the University are playing with the feelings of locals as well as the doctors working in the department”, he blamed.

Chettri said that he has given an ultimatum to all the concerned departments of the state and central government to come back with a proper explanation by March 5.

“If they fail to provide answer within the said timeline, we will make another strategy to deal with it”, he threatened.

Chettri further said that all the officials of the said department are supporting fake private companies and institutions. “State government has been paying Rs. 2.50 lakhs per year to the authorities of Manipal hospital.

However, state planning commission and North East council is unaware about it. If the Manipal Hospital has valid documents and license then this is the time they should produce it. State government has appointed a registrar in the University, but the DOP department is not aware of it. This is the reason I have applied Chief Information Commission”, he maintained.
Mr. Chettri has sent a letter to Home Ministry, Education Department along with the education Minister, President of India and other departments regarding the approval of Sikkim Manipal University.

Reportedly, the SPIO, Land revenue department has returned Mr. Chettri’s application. “This budge is an attempt by the SPIO to protect and defend SMU and the wrongdoers”, said Chettri.
