Sikkim: Manipal hospital’s security guard manhandles patient

Gangtok, 5 June 2012:

A patient undergoing treatment at Central Referral Hospital (Manipal) has filed an FIR at Sadar Police Station alleging manhandling in the hospital on Sunday night.

Purna Bahadhur Kalikotey resident of Dhajey Ranka (East Sikkim) said that the guard deployed in the seventh floor of the hospital hit him while coming back after meeting his wife. “I and my wife (Bhīma Kalikotey) were admitted in the hospital on May 31 after severe diahorea and vomiting, I was admitted in the next ward and had gone to have dinner with my wife. While coming back the two security guards in the corridor started using abusive language, when opposed one them thrashed me back” said 41 years old Purna Bahadhur. He added, “On hearing the visitors of other patients in the hospital intervened and the guard fled away.”

Central Referral Hospital has deployed 24 Security Guards of Third Eye Security Services in the Hospital to guard the different wards. One of the eye witnesses of the incident Jiwan Rai said, “I was coming back bringing medicines from the shop for my father who is admitted in the hospital. I saw one of the guards beating the man” The family members of the victim also alleged that although the matter was taken to the Hospital Management no action was taken against the said security guard. However the Hospital Management said that it was the visitor of the particular patient who manhandled the security guards. “The patient team has filed an FIR at Police Station and the matter is under investigation, if the security guard is found guilty he will be terminated” said Medical Superintendent of the hospital Dr Samsher Singh.
