New Delhi, 26 July 2012:

The trailer of Life of Pi, the much awaited English movie of maverick Taiwanese film director, Ang Lee, has been released.

The film is based on an amazing fantasy adventure novel by Yann Martel. The UK edition of the book won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction in 2001.

In a letter directly to Martel, Barack Obama had described Life of Pi as “an elegant proof of God, and the power of storytelling”.

The protagonist of ‘Life of Pi, Piscine Molitor “Pi” Patel, an Indian boy from Pondicherry, explores issues of spirituality and practicality from an early age. He survives 227 days after a shipwreck, while stranded on a boat in the Pacific Ocean with a Bengal tiger.

The film has many Indian actors. A young debutant Suraj Sharma is playing the role of “Pi” Patel. Shravanthi Sainath is Pi’s Girlfriend. Very talented Indian actress Tabu will be seen after a long time as Pi’s mother. Theatre and film actor Adil Hussain will play Pi’s father. Adult “Pi” Patel is played be terrific Indian actor Irrfan Khan. ‘Spider-Man’ Tobey Maguire will be seen as Yann Martel.

Lee has earliar directed Eat Drink Man Woman (1994), Sense and Sensibility (1995), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film), Hulk (2003), and Brokeback Mountain (2005), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Director. He is the first person of Asian descent to win the Best Director Oscar.
