Man beaten up by own son in Sikkim

GANGTOK, July 11, 2013

An elderly man is presently admitted at STNM hospital with fractures after being severely beaten up with an iron rod allegedly by his own son. The incident happened on July 5 at Tareythang village, Pakyong subdivision in east district.

Punya Prasad Poudyal (65) was assaulted when he tried to intervene in a dispute. The accused son Shanti Ram (45) was arrested by Pakyong police and has been sent for judicial custody at Rongyek jail.

“The relationship between my son and daughter-in-law was not good. Several attempts made to resolve the differences failed,” said Punya Prasad to SIKKIM EXPRESS.

Shanti Ram, a farmer by profession and his wife were living separately since earlier this year. The incident had taken place when the wife had come to Tareythang from Pakyong.

A case under section 326 of IPC (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) has been registered against Shanti Ram at Pakyong police station.

The wife told media that she is a victim of domestic violence. She works in the Forest department as a lower division clerk. The couple has two children.
