Gangtok: Jan. 10, 2011

“Coming together to make a difference……….. Yes we can”, with this slogan a voluntary blood donation camp was organized at the Power and Energy Department, Gangtok yesterday. This camp was organized by the newly formed NGO named Sikkim Human Social Rights Organization, Gangtok (SHASRO) and was supported and sponsored by Sikkim State Blood Transfusion Council (SSBTC) and Khadi and Village Industry Commission (KVIC).

This is the first of its kind in the state that a voluntary blood donation camp has been organized in a Government department, informs Dr. C.M. Sharma (Blood Bank of Sikkim). SHASRO with the help of SSBTC is eager to organize more blood donation camps in other Government departments if permission is granted by the State Government. Today’s donation was not to mark any special event but to spread more awareness about blood donation and how helpful it is for the needy and the donors too.

The voluntary unpaid donors play a crucial role in the society as the blood donated by them contributes in saving lives especially during the shortage of blood. “One drop of blood can give life to someone”, says the banner displayed at the camp. The response of the people today also depends a lot for conducting blood donation camps in other departments in the future.

The NGO SHASRO formed on the 2nd day of October 2010 has been doing social works but this is the first in which they interacted with the public on a large scale. The NGO not only focuses on donating blood but also on other various social welfare activities such as taking a stand against domestic violence, helping the needy, helping the school dropouts to encourage further study and many more. The main motive of the organization is to work for humane causes, informs Suraj Gazmer, Treasurer SHASRO. “We are a newly formed organization and we want to work more on motivating and encouraging the people on voluntary blood donation”, said Deepak Sharma the General Secretary, SHASRO. More such camps would be organized in other districts of Sikkim soon.
