National Voters Day to be celebrated across Sikkim

Gangtok, Jan. 21, 2011:

Special Summery Revision of Electoral Roll of the Assembly Constituency of Sikkim that was carried out since 30th October till 29th November 2011. After this revision the number of voters increased from 3, 08,340 in 2010 to 3,14,257 in the final publication of Electoral Roll of 5th January 2011.

Addressing the media Mr. VB Pathak, Chief Electoral Officer, Sikkim in a conference conducted at conference hall, Election Department, said that there has been a net increase of 5917 voters during the special summery revision and out of 3, 14,257 voters of state 3, 13,569 have been already issued Election Photo Identity Card and only 688 voters have been left out to be issued with Photo ID card.

Mr. Pathak informed that 1.47 % electors have been increased during this special summary revision of electoral roll whereas the percentage of photo coverage is 99.78% and only 688 voters are left to issue Photo ID cards to cover 100% voters in the state which Mr. Pathak said would be covered soon.

For the first time the Election Commission of India decided to celebrate National Voters Day throughout the country on 25th January with an objective of spreading awareness about voting. The celebration will take place on the state level at Chintan Bhawan. The Governor will preside as the chief guest and the electors of three constituencies that is Gangtok, Upper Tadong and Arithang are invited to attend the ceremony. Along with state level ceremony all the 333 locations and 495 polling booths across the state will also celebrate this occasion. All the newly registered voters aged 18-20 years that is a total of 4676 voters will also be felicitated with a badge of “Proud to be voter, Ready to vote” . Election Photo ID cards will be distributed to the electors of 18-20 years of age along with those who have registered their names in the electoral roll, for the first time.

Considering the National Voters Day celebration the Chief Electoral Officer, Sikkim has even issued directives to all DEROs to organize felicitation ceremony at every polling station level. In order to celebrate the function, the Principal, Headmasters of Schools and office bearers of local Panchayats have been invited to witness the function. Booth Level Officers (BLO) will even organize the booth level function and EPIC will be handed over to all the electors of 18-20yrs registered in the Electoral Roll for the first time. On the occasion the BLO will administer the National Voters Day Pledge to all the citizens present on the occasion. The BLO will even submit the report to DEROs along with the photographs for onward submission to the Election Commission of India.
