Mobilising and educating on HIV/AIDS through infotainment is one of the medium to draw participation of one of the most vulnerable groups, the youths. With an aim to spread the awareness from urban to rural population Sikkim State AIDS Control Society initiated the “Red Ribbon Sikkim Star” talent hunt competition, part of Multi-Media Campaign 2010-2011.
The first round of auditions has been successfully completed with 45 teams making it to the Semi final round which is scheduled to be conducted on 5th and 6th January 2011 at Tadong Government College Auditorium, Gangtok. It can be mentioned here that the auditions were conducted in all the 4 districts, starting from Mangan on 13th December followed by auditions at Gangtok on 15th and 16th December, Namchi on 18th and 19th December and finally wrapping up at Gyalshing on 21st and 22nd December 2010. Out of 250 teams registered for the competition, only 119 teams could make it to the audition round.
The participants were judged by panel of 5 renowned personalities namely Mr. Narayan Rai (lyricist, composer and singer), Mrs. Bimla Pradhan (singer and lyricist), Mr. R. D. Lepcha (theatre specialist), Mr. Uttam Pradhan (actor) and Dr. DS Kerongi (Deputy Director M & E, SSACS).
The shortlisted teams from all the 4 districts were judged in 3 categories: dance, song and play, with HIV/AIDS as the central theme. The 5 teams selected from North District are Bikkey Agarwal, Ringhim Teen Club, Jagriti Club and 2 teams from Malling Youth Club in dance and song category. Similarly, 15 teams from East District were selected namely Eagle Band (Team A) Pangthang, Padam Gandharwa Singtam, Tenth B Group, Ismaran Band, Siddhi Vinayak Sewa Samiti Kheasy, Ekta Club, Himali Sangh Rongli, Swapnil Swarupa Giri & Party, Ujjal Kala Kendra, Mahila Kalyankari Sangh, Eagle Band (Team B), Chandmari Bal Bikash and Youth, VHAS, RRC Government Law College and Divine Mercy. The 15 teams selected from South District are RRC Kitam, Bindas Group, BRSTP Dance Group, Mingma Dorjee Lepcha, Jit Kumar Rai, Mani Kumar Rai, Tek Prasad Rai, Dead Squad, Mohan Timsina & Party, Sushila Rai, Indrakhil Natya Manch, RRC Adarsh Samiti, MTB Sadam, Tanak Project Samiti and Kanchenjunga Sangh. From West District 10 teams will compete at Semi final round, they are RRC Yuksom Secondary School, Soulmate Soreng, Sujata Rai, Jumbo Band, Manthan Band, Rinchenpong Musical Group, Dasharthik Sangh, Kala Kunj Natya Sadan and 2 teams from RRC Lingchom Secondary School.
