Sikkim Landslide: CS to convene emergency meet today

Gangtok, September 28, 2012:

The Chief Secretary, Karma Gyatso will be convening a special emergency meeting on Friday i.e. September 28, 2012 with all the heads of the line departments, DGP, GOC, Indian Air Force, BRO and BSNL etc. to discuss about the latest situation related to the North Sikkim flashflood and landslides. The meeting will also discuss about the assessment of damages in North Sikkim and other districts as well, progress of immediate restoration of power and water supply and communication and roads as well. It has been informed that all the interlinked departments and organizations have to assess the damage for preparation of memorandum to be submitted to Government of India.

Meanwhile the Chief Secretary had a telephonic conversation with Union Home Secretary, R.K Singh, and informed about the current situation in disaster affected areas. Singh in his turn assured all support from the Government of India.

Further, it has been informed that the road connectivity from Chungthang to Lachen will open tomorrow. The BRO is putting all man and machine to open Chungthang-Lachung road and is expected to be opened at the earliest. As for now the, water supply is restored. Also the food material is being transported in the interior areas of North Sikkim. 80 bags of rice have already been transported yesterday to Lachung. Dal, atta, mustard oil, poly pipes, raincoat, torch light and candles were also dispatched today.
